Digestion

Digestion is the mechanical and chemical breaking down of food molecules into smaller components that can be absorbed into our blood , for instance. They are of two types-external and internal digestive system. Some of the organs playing mportant role in digestion are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, gallbladder, pancreas and liver. The mouth and teeth are the first step in breaking food down. With their help the food is chewed and shredded. when the food is chewed the saliva is squirted into the mouth which helps to soften the food. Also it contains an enzyme that helps break down the starch in the food. After chewing the food passes down the esophagus to the stomach. The muscles in the esophagus move the food down the tube. After reaching the stomach, food is mixed with acids and with the movement of the muscles in the stomach ,the food is broken down. The food pulp after that is sent to the small intestine.Digestive juices released in the small intestine finish breaking down the food.Waste products and food which remains unabsorbed in the small intestine passes into the large intestine.this unwanted material is called the feces. It may take as long as twenty hours for food to pass completely through the large intestine. Then comes the pancreas which also plays a very important role in our digestive system which helps in secreting pancreatic juices containing enzymes. The pancreas also secrets insulin into the blood which is needed to allow glucose or sugar from food to get into the bloodstream. The largest gland in the body is the liver.it stores a form of glucose called glycogen. This organ is also where alcohol, drugs, bacteria and old blood cells are broken down and removed from the body and damage to the liver can lead to serious problems as this organ is extremely necessary to life. The gallbladder is a small sac on the underside of the right side of the liver. It stores bile that is made by the liver which is needed to breakdown the fat that is in food. The main hormones that control digestion are gastrin, secretin, and cholecystokinin.
Hence the digestive sytem is very important in digestion of our food in every one's life as the body can use them to build and nourish cells and to provide energy which is very important for the healthy life...
